Aster's 2006 bay Premium Oldenburg filly, Allelujah, is by Ruffian. Aster's 2004 Premium Oldenburg filly, Athena, is also sired by Ruffian, and it is her grace and beauty that prompted us to repeat this pairing.
After Carole Kras Lawrence purchased Ruffian as a two year old at the Oldenburg Auction in Vechta, Germany in the fall of 1999, he was approved for breeding by the German Oldenburg Verband in the spring of 2000. He spent the following months at Nicole Uphoff's training barn and was carefully prepared for his 100 day test, which took place from August until November 2000 in Warendorf. Being born at the end of June, Ruffian was the youngest stallion in his class of 32 stallions and finished second in Dressage and fourth overall, with a score of 119.4. Some of his individual scores were:
Canter 9.0
Trot 8.0
Walk 9.0
Character 8.5
Temperament 8.5
Rideability 8.5
Imported into the United States in December 2000, Ruffian participated in three breed shows in 2001, winning all his classes and the Grand Championships at all three shows. In September of 2001 he won the Materiale class for 4 and 5 year old stallions at Dressage at Devon and placed 4th in the Cosequin Finals at the same show. In addition to his breed show successes, Ruffian has a successful dressage competition record, qualifying for and placing at the Regional Finals and is currently showing at 4th level.
During his first four years at stud, Ruffian has been bred successfully to almost 100 mares. Over 90% of the resulting foals have been rated as Premium by the German Oldenburg Verband/Oldenburg Horse Breeders Society. In 2004, one of his sons was named a stallion prospect.
Ruffian made his debut at 4th Level with rider Roy C. Toppings at the April 2006 dressage show at Morven Park. Ruffian placed first or second in all of his classes with scores well into the 60s. The pictures below were taken during a 4th Level class.
